Unlike the abstract paintings the subject matter in these paintings takes priority. These paintings have developed from charcoal life drawings and photographs of farm animals. Focus is placed on the physical structure of the animals.

The colours used are often non representational, again focusing on the tonal structure of the animal. In some of the paintings I have been working in layers with line and block colours contrasting with areas of black and white tonal layer over the original full colour surface thus creating a sort of collaging effect, for example see.

An influence has been the Dutch artist Rien Poortvliet and his studies of animals.
